How hard is it to find someone to start and complete a project or construction job for you? It can be difficult if you don't know the right steps to take at the beginning of the job. It all begins with a completely written out contract that includes draw payments, proof of insurance, dispute resolution clauses, complete list of job material (or as complete as can be drawn up), start and estimated completion dates, a signature page, change order page with signature and explaination for how to submit a change order. These are the basics of a good contract and it will help the owner identify a good company from a fly by night company. Also, the company should have a legitmate license number that can be checked out on the Contractors State license boards website.

Yes, having a completely written out contract is a must, but finding a reputable licensed contractors is the first thing that you must do. When you find a contractor who is licensed, bonded and had liability and workers compensation insurance, you are going down the right path. The second thing that you want to do is see if the contractor has a job or two local to where you live that you can drive by and look at the quality of work. When these steps are done then call the contractor to see if he/she would meet you at one of the job sites. Discuss some of the issues involved in completing the job and get a feel for contractor. After doing this leg work then it is time to decide if this person would be your choice to sit down and discuss your project.
